Music genres are the soundtrack to our daily lives, but aside from “popular” music, most people can’t name more than a few other genres. If you learn more about music and expand your musical knowledge, below is a list of other music genres that you might or might not know of yet.

EDM

EDM has made its mark by bringing together a diverse group of people under one music genre. Electronic Dance Music, commonly referred to as EDM, encompasses many different types of electronic dance music genres and subgenres. This makes it very difficult for people to decide which EDM genre they like the most. It has roots in disco, techno, and house music. It also draws from dubstep, drum and bass, hip hop, and country music.

EDM is often described as all of these genres rolled into one sound that makes everyone want to get up and dance. One of the best things about it is that it incorporates so many different genres and sounds, but there really isn’t a right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing your favorite type of EDM. Whether you like dubstep or electro house, you will find a good beat or catchy lyrics that make you want to dance no matter what kind of music it is or who sings it.

Chillhop

Chillhop music is a subgenre of ambient electronic music. It is generally instrumental, with slow tempos and an emphasis on atmosphere and mood. The genre is also characterized by its incorporation of elements from various other genres. The chillhop community has now grown so much that there are thousands of tracks shared online every month. And with the growth, new subgenres have emerged into the scene, each with its own feel and characteristics.

Deep House

Deep House is a music genre that reflects the taste of DJs and record producers for the more soulful side of house music. Deep house was originally popular in Chicago but became more popular in Europe. It has been described as “the sound of American underground dance music,” and it was pioneered by the likes of DJ Pierre, Adonis, and Marshall Jefferson. Deep house is characterized by a slow tempo (around 120 beats per minute), stripped-down aesthetic, and organic instrumentation.

Deep house tracks generally emphasize synth pads and other “warmer” sounds instead of the “crisper” electronic sounds (such as hi-hats and cymbals) used in other forms of house music. This gives the deep house and atmospheric, almost soothing sound.
